Monitoring Microsoft Exchange servers

  • Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology Service: Ensures connectivity between Exchange and Active Directory.
  • Microsoft Exchange Transport Service: Manages email flow.
  • Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication Service: Handles mailbox migration and replication.
  • Azure AD Connect Health Sync Monitor: Monitors synchronization between on-premises Active Directory and Azure AD.

  • Processes


  • Microsoft.Exchange.Store.Worker.exe: Manages mailbox database operations.
  • Microsoft.Exchange.Transport.exe: Handles message transport.
  • Microsoft.Exchange.RpcClientAccess.Service.exe: Manages RPC client access.
  • AzureADConnectSync.exe: Handles identity synchronization between Active Directory and Azure AD.

  • Ports and Sockets


  • 443 (TCP): Used for secure HTTPS communications.
  • 80 (TCP): Used for downloading certificate revocation lists (CRL).
  • 53 (TCP): Used for DNS queries to resolve domain names.
  • 88 (TCP): Used for Kerberos authentication with Active Directory.
  • 389 (TCP): Used for LDAP queries to Active Directory.
  • 445 (TCP): Used by Seamless SSO and password write-back.

  • Performance Counters


  • MSExchangeIS Store\Active Connection Count: Number of active connections to the information store.
  • MSExchange Transport Queues\Aggregate Delivery Queue Length: Length of the email delivery queue.
  • MSExchange ActiveSync\Requests/sec: Number of ActiveSync requests per second.
  • Processor(_Total)\% Processor Time: Overall CPU usage.
  • Memory\Available MBytes: Available memory in MB.

  • URL Probes


  • https://outlook.office365.com/owa/: Checks the availability of Outlook Web Access.
  • https://autodiscover.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml: Verifies the AutoDiscover functionality.
  • https://login.microsoftonline.com/: Checks access to Microsoft's online login portal.

  • Response Time
  • Measure response times of key services (OWA, ActiveSync, Web Services) to ensure optimal performance.
